The Republic of the Marshall Islands is an island nation near the equator in the vast endless blue of the Pacific Ocean. The country spreads out across three islands and 29 coral atolls, which comprise 1156 individual islands and islets. Most parts of the Marshall Islands are less than 5.9 feet above sea level.

Even before the era of the Ancient Greeks, the Marshall Islands were already inhabited. But now the greenhouse gas emissions of the industrial societies severely harm or might even destroy the ancient culture of the Marshall Islands. Because the sea is rising. Negative forecasts predict the uninhabitability of the islands by the year 2050.

What would you do if your home was at stake? And what would you say to the ones that cause the threat? Can there be hope? The answer is almost as obvious as it is astonishing.

“One Word” is a participatory full feature documentary about the impacts of climate change on the Republic of the Marshall Islands and its people. The movie was developed and filmed with the strong inclusion of Marshallese people through film workshops that have run over a period of nine months. The movie is narrated by the protagonists only. It is only their voices that count.

Early in the morning of November 8, 2018, a spark flies into the parched brush of the Sierra Nevada foothills. With little warning, flames are everywhere. Fierce diablo winds shower burning embers as house after house becomes a violent inferno. Propane tanks explode as desperate citizens grab their most precious possessions and jump into their vehicles hoping to escape.

With unfathomable, harrowing footage, Academy Award–winning filmmaker Ron Howard pulls the viewer into the driver’s seat to experience the terror and the helplessness of devastated refugees from a town with the ironic name of Paradise. Eighty-five lives are lost in what ultimately becomes the most destructive wildfire in California’s history.

Over the course of a year, survivors from Paradise cope with shared trauma, displacement, and uncertainty about the future. Yet slowly, with sheer grit and determination, they begin to rebuild their lives and redefine the meaning of home. “Rebuilding Paradise” is a testament to the power of the human spirit from one of our most gifted filmmakers.

Extinction Rebellion was born in October 2018 in the United Kingdom. Soon, this global movement of civil disobedience in the fight against ecological collapse and global warming saw the emergence of local groups in the 4 corners of the globe. There are now 500 of them in more than 70 countries.

In Fribourg, Switzerland, as elsewhere, the rebellion is being organized. We have followed the evolution of the group and the activists who make it up, to understand the motivations that drive them to practice non-violent civil disobedience, but also their doubts and hopes.

Climate change is causing enormous damage in the ocean as well, leading to a major coral death. Titouan Bernicout found a way to save the corals.
In Moorea, French Polynesia, the nonprofit group Coral Gardeners tends broken pieces of coral on a nursery table for one month before reattaching them to reefs. Travelers there can adopt a coral piece and help the group plant it.

The film “There Is No Planet B” is a good introduction to the problem of climate change. It shows the effects of global warming on the environment. Melting glaciers, floods, sea level rise, droughts, forest fires and many other circumstances are causing people to lose their homes.

The film also shows the problem of social inequality, because often it is the already disadvantaged people in the population who are more affected by the effects. In Seattle, various students have gathered to go on strike and demand that politicians take action. For example, they demand more investment in renewable energy.

A “wall” of 8,000 kilometres in length, which runs through eleven African states, is to be built as a protective barrier against drought, the spread of the desert and the consequences of climate change. Filmmaker Jared P. Scott travels with the main character Inna Modja along this wall and shows that this ambitious project does not divide but rather connects.

In times of unfettered populism and growing mistrust towards the elite, we follow Klaus Schwab, the 81-year-old founder of the controversial World Economic Forum, over the course of one year. We accompany him as he works to carry out his mission: to improve the state of the world.

When Klaus Schwab writes a letter to climate activist Greta Thunberg after her appearance at the WEF 2019, a dialogue begins between the generations that gives hope.

Can Klaus Schwab‘s vision bear fruit and can the WEF contribute to solving global problems? Or is it just another part of the problem and does it ultimately serve the interests of the global elite alone?

This is the true story of the meeting between Frost, a beautiful polar bear mother, and Asgeir Helgestad, a Norwegian wildlife filmmaker.

It is a four-year journey in Svalbard. Rising temperatures are responsible for dramatic changes in Frost’s ecosystem as the ice is melting at record speed. From complete darkness to the absolute light of the midnight sun, Svalbard transforms from a cold and inhospitable place to the most joyous and lively scene for ice algae, fish, birds and animals. But alongside these seasonal transformations, the disappearing sea ice forces life to new limits. Fjords that were once full of ice and seals, get abandoned pushing Frost further away. Asgeir is determined to find her and document all that is being lost, but his task is far from easy.

This film explores the question “this planet is home to all of us, can we afford to ignore it?”
